Even though the idea of banning ‘hate speech’ has gained popularity in recent years, freedom of speech should be viewed as an essential component of a free, American society because it is fundamental to preserving the Founding Fathers’ original intent of the First Amendment, limits governmental overreach, and allows for the open exchange of ideas even if a few choose to abuse their right.
